Garage workshop plans

A garage with a bench. Both plans draw a workbench along the back wall, and the 30x40 adds a second door and room for machines.

What it needs

A bench on the back wall and a wide door.

A workshop is a garage with more floor kept clear. The bench is a convention we draw, not a code rule.

  1. 01Bench

The bench along the back wall.

The bench is 24 in deep and 36 in high, our convention (rule ED-BENCH), set along the back wall of the 24x30 and the 30x40. It is a drawing aid: you build the bench you want, and the designer keeps the wall clear of it.

  2. 02Floor

    Room around the bench.

The 24x30 leaves 720 sq ft; the 30x40 has 1,200. Machines need room on every side, so count the floor you want clear before you pick, and size the doors for the longest stock you carry in.

  3. 03Snow and wind

Every check runs at your loads.

These starting plans are drawn for 30 psf of ground snow, 115 mph of wind and a 36 in frost line. Change the snow, the wind or the frost line in the designer and the headers, the studs, the trusses and the footing follow. Above 70 psf of ground snow the roof needs an engineer, and the designer says so.

Each row is the starting plan as drawn, for 30 psf of ground snow, 115 mph of wind and a 36 in frost line. Materials are rounded: shelf prices plus the estimated trusses and concrete, before sales tax, delivery, labor and site work. Each plan page keeps the shelf prices, the estimate and the exact sum apart. Labor is the published range for hiring it out, a broad reference and not a quote; build time is total labor hours. Passed means the preliminary checks passed for those loads; local approval is not checked.

Questions about garage workshop plans

We draw 24 in deep and 36 in high, a common bench size and our own convention rather than a code figure (rule ED-BENCH). Deeper benches take more floor; pick the depth by what you work on and how far you reach.

It depends on the work. Our two start at 24x30 (720 sq ft) with two 9 ft doors and 30x40 (1,200 sq ft), which also parks a third car. Count the bench, the machines and the clear floor around them, then pick the plan that holds them.
